Multidisciplinary Care

At Addison Physical Medicine, we believe that an integrated approach to diagnosis and care provides the most appropriate and effective care for patients. Our team of experts from a variety of disciplines will benefit our patient with a more accurate diagnosis and a more complete range of treatment options.

Addison Physical Medicine, is a comprehensive musculoskeletal rehabiliation organization that offers a combined multi-disciplinary approach utilizing Medical Physicians, Chiropractic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Massage Therapists.   Addison Physical is capable of the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.  We accomplish this by utilizing cutting edge diagnostic and treatment protocols administered by highly qualified and licensed professionals.

The medical physician and Chiropractors have the ability to differentially diagnose your musculoskeletal condition by performing a thorough history and physical exam.  The physicians can also order a variety of tests such as electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCV), x-rays, and MRI.   Based on the history and physical findings, the physicians create a customized treatment plan for our patients.  The treatment plan is then co-managed by our Chiropractors, Medical Doctor and Physical Therapists in order to provide a comprehensive treatment program customized for each patient.

Our promise to you is that if we cant help you we have several avenues for referal to the appropriate physican including orthopedic surgeon, neuro surgeon and neurologist for consultations and second opinions.

Corrective Exercises

Your feet are the "foundation" of your health. Problems in the feet can set off a chain reaction of symptoms, including uneven shoe wear, irregular gait, arch pains, knee pain, back pain, and even headaches! If examination concludes that there is a problem, custom-made orthotics may be recommended to correct an anatomically short leg, pronation problems, and postural and structural abnormalities. The procedure for fitting you for the orthotics takes very little time and is easy to do. The digital scan is sent to a laboratory, where your customized orthotics are designed and tailored for your specific needs. If you experience foot pain in your day-to-day activities, or in the sport of choice, custom-made orthotics may be part of the solution.

Lifestyle Advice

We often find it helpful to "coach" our patients on certain activities they should avoid or do differently to avoid aggravating their particular health challenge. Our goal is to help every patient achieve a fulfilling and happy lifestyle full of the activities they enjoy most. We recognize that each our patient is a whole person, and help them reach true health and wellness is a collaborate effort between our professionals and our patient

Literature Overview of Forward Head Posture Significance to Health

Forward head posture has been extensively studied and related to a number of conditions including cervical headache (1), obstructive sleep apnea (2), craniomandibular dysfunction (3),craniofacial pain (4) and upper limb overuse injuries (5). Cailliet considers forward head posture as a significant contributor to pain in the neck and arm (6) and also attributes changes in cartilage, joint capsules, and muscular tissue to prolonged maintenance of this posture.

From a mechanical viewpoint, it makes sense that abnormalities of cervical curvature, especially forward head posture, would place additional stress on the spine and soft tissues. A static spinal model has been used by Snijders et al. (7) to show that forward flexion of the head can produce significant loading on the cervical muscles and increase joint reaction forces. In the mathematical model, increased loading is due to the position of the center of gravity of thehead relative to the supporting joints. With the head in a flexed position, muscle activity must be used to counteract the tendency of the head to fall forward; this muscle activity also produces compression in the cervical joints. In one model, forward flexion beyond 30 degrees produced joint reaction forces equal to twice the weight of the skull.

Forward head carriage, like forward flexion, would also place the center of gravity of the skull well forward of the supporting column and produce similar increased loading on the muscles and joints. Prolonged maintenance of a head-forward posture might take its toll by slowly wearing the spinal joints and thereby causing cervical spondylosis (8) and dysfunctional aging.

Posture and spinal screenings can reveal important health information and unlock the door to improved health and well-being.  We use Computerized Postural Analysis to determine your posture number.  We provide screenings at community events, health clubs,  health fairs and places of employment. Contact us today to arrange a screening at your event or workplace.

Why is posture so important?  It’s estimated for every inch the head moves forward from neutral requires the exertion of 15-30 pounds of extra muscle tension. This extra muscle tension is transmitted down the spine, increasing chronic loading on the vertebrae and the intervertebral disks.

Using a formula developed by a Russian Ph. D. in Physics, Posture Pro estimates the additional forces placed on the cervical spine.
